Division 2 is the fourth tier in the Swedish league system and comprises 84 Swedish football teams. Division 2 had the status of the official second level from 1928 to 1986, but was replaced by Division 1 in 1987. It then had the status of the official third level until 2005, but was again replaced in 2006 by the newly created Division 1.
There are 84 clubs in Division 2, divided into six groups of 14 teams each representing a geographical area. During a season (starting in April and ending in October) each club plays twice, once in the home stadium and once in the stadium of the opponent, a total of 26 games. At the end of each season, the two lowest ranked teams in each group descend into Division 3, and the twelve winning teams from the twelve division 3 leagues are promoted in their place, while the third lowest teams in the Division 2 leagues contest the ascent / descent Play-offs against the twelve second-placed teams in Division 3. The top team of each Division 2 group is promoted in Division 1, and the three lowest teams in each Division 1-Liga descend in their stead.
