South Korea won the first two AFC Asian Cup tournaments (1956 and 1960), but has not won since and finished second in 1972, 1980, 1988 and 2015 and third in 1964, 2000 and 2007. and 2011. They also took the gold medal at the 1970, 1978 and 1986 Asian Games. They have qualified for every FIFA World Cup since 1986.

They then faced Mexico and lost 2-1 after receiving another penalty. Despite the two defeats in a row, South Korea has not yet retired. South Korea would have to win the last group match against defending champion Germany with at least two goals and Mexico football would have to win in the last group stage against Sweden. For its part, South Korea did what it took to stay in the competition, beating Germany 2-0, knocking it out in the first round for the first time in 80 years. Mexico, however, lost to Sweden on the same day and South Korea eventually finished third in the group.
