Serbian national football team -Орлови

The Serbian national football team represents Serbia in the men's international football competition. It is controlled by the Serbian Football Federation, the Serbian Football Association.

With the national team nicknamed Orlovi (Орлови), football has a long history in both Serbia and neighboring countries. Serbia came under the various forms of the Yugoslav national teams, where it achieved considerable success and finished fourth in the 1930 and 1962 World Championships. Considered by FIFA and UEFA as successors to the national teams of Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro, the successes of the promising team of the nineties (with players such as Dragan Stojkovic, Dejan Savicic, Predrag Mijatovic, Vladimir Jugovic and Siniša Mihajlovic) was due to international sanctions slowed somewhat against Yugoslavia at the time due to the Yugoslav wars.

After the dissolution of Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia has been an independent nation since 2006, qualifying for the 2010 and 2018 World Cups.

Both FIFA and UEFA regard the Serbian national team as the direct and sole successor to the teams from Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro.

Serbia was drawn against semi-finalists of the 2016 European Championship from Wales, Austria, Ireland, Georgia and Moldova. They started their season with a 2-2 draw with Ireland at Rajko Mitic Stadium, continuing their good form with victories against Austria, Georgia and Moldova.

Serbia beat Moldova in Belgrade with goals from Aleksandar Kolarov, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mijat Gacinovic. This consolidated her first position in her group fight with Ireland. They won this match with a goal from Kolarov in the 55th minute. Serbia finished 1-0 at home to Georgia and finished Group D as leaders. After the 2018 World Cup Mladen Krstajić became a permanent coach for Serbia. Serbia started the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League season, which was part of the UEFA Euro 2020 campaign. Serbia was divided into League C and drawn into Group 4 with Montenegro, Lithuania and Romania. With both wins against Lithuania and Montenegro and two draws with Romania, Serbia were Group winners, securing the play-off spot for Euro 2020 and rising to League B for the 2020-21 season.

For the Euro 2020 qualification, Serbia has been relegated to Group B with the champions of 2016, Portugal, Ukraine, Lithuania and Luxembourg. Serbia started the qualifiers with a 1-1 draw with Portugal. In the next away game against Ukraine Serbia lost the game with an embarrassing 0-5 and was the biggest defeat for Serbia. This game is also controversial because of Krstajić's coaching style. After a 4-1 home win against Lithuania Krstajić was dismissed mainly because of a defeat against Ukraine and replaced by Ljubiša Tumbaković. Serbia is currently in third place with four points.
