The competition consists of 16 teams. The league has three Champions League qualifying spots, which will be awarded to the top three teams at the end of the season. The Russian Premier League followed the Top Division including history and records. The Top Division was led by the Professional Football League of Russia. The foundation of the Premier League is intended to give the clubs a higher degree of independence. The league currently is called Rosgosstrakh Russian Football Championship (Russian: Росгосстрах - Чемпионат России по футболу) for sponsorship reasons.

Since the introduction of the Russian Premier League in 2002, CSKA Moscow (4 times), Zenit St. Petersburg and Lokomotiv Moscow (3 times each), Rubin Kazan (2 times) and Spartak Moscow (1 time) have won the title. Zenit Saint Petersburg is the current Russian champions of the Premier League.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, which began in 1992, each former Soviet republic organized an independent national championship. In Russia, the six Russian teams that had played in the 1991 Soviet league (CSKA Moscow, Spartak Moscow, Torpedo Moscow, Dynamo Moscow, Spartak Vladikavkaz and Lokomotiv Moscow), with 14 teams from the lower divisions added to a 20-member squad , Team Russian Top Division. The top division was further divided into two groups to reduce the total number of games. The number of teams in the top division was gradually reduced to 18 in 1993 and 16 in 1994. Since then, the Russian top division (and then the Premier League) consists of 16 teams, with the exception of a short-lived experiment with two teams more teams in 1996 and 1997.

Spartak Moscow was the dominant force in the top flight and won nine of the top ten titles. Spartak-Alania Vladikavkaz was the only team to break the dominance of Spartak and win the championship in 1995. Lokomotiv Moscow won the title three times and CSKA Moscow six times.

In 2007, Zenit St. Petersburg rose to the top and won the title for the first time in its history in Russian professional football. They also won a Soviet championship in 1984. In 2008, Rubin Kazan rose, a club that was completely new to the Russian top league, as he had never played in the Soviet top league.

In the mid-2010s, several stadiums were opened. CSKA Moscow received a new stadium called Arena CSKA, later VEB Arena. It has a capacity of 30,000. FC Krasnodar received the most modern stadium in Europe, Krasnodar Stadium. It has a capacity of 34,000.

In preparation for the 2018/19 season, it was decided to rebrand, with a new logo, and the league was renamed the Russian Premier League (RPL).

The Russian Premier League teams play twice at home and once away for a total of 30 games. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. If the teams are equal, the tie is the number of victories, followed by the goal difference and several other factors. If the teams are tied for the first position, the tie indicates the number of victories and there is a direct duel. If the teams claiming first place can not be separated from these breakers, a decider play for the championship will be arranged.

Russian Premier League match between Lokomotiv and Spartak at Lokomotiv Stadium As of 2010, the champions and runners-up qualify for the Uefa Champions league football group stage. The third-placed team qualify for the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The fourth and fifth teams qualify for the Uefa league football. The two lowest teams descend into the First Division (from 2011 renamed National Football League).

Unlike most other European football leagues, the league has traditionally run in the summer from March to November so as not to play games in cold and snowy weather during the winter. This was changed before the 2012-2013 season, with the league planning to run the season from fall to spring. The transitional season of the competition began in early 2011 and lasted until summer 2012. After the 16 Premier League teams had played twice in the course of the calendar year 2011, they were divided into two groups of eight and the teams played against each other teams in their group twice more for a total 44 games (30 in 2011 and 14 in 2012). These two groups were contested in the spring of 2012, with the top eight clubs battling for the title and European places. The other teams vied to avoid the relegation: The bottom two teams went under, while the next two teams played against the third and fourth teams of the National Football League, with the two losers were relegated (or denied the rise). From the middle of December to mid-March, the league is making a three-month winter break following the current Autumn / Spring calendar.
