Football is the third sport in Latvia after hockey and basketball

Football is the third sport in Latvia after hockey and basketball. Many other sports are also more popular in Latvia than football, but in recent years it has gained popularity. The Latvian Football Federation (Latvian: Latvijas Futbola federācija) is the national umbrella organization of the sport. There is a league system in which the league and the first league are the top leagues in Latvia. There is also the Latvian Second League, where mainly amateur teams play. There are also national cup competitions, with the Latvian Cup being the most notable.

Skonto FC was the most popular and successful football team in Latvia and has won the Latvian league 14 times since independence from Russia. Latvian football is full of corruption and bribery. FK Ventspils is just one team from Latvia that played in the group stage of the Uefa league football (2009-10). There is no Latvian side that played in the Uefa Champions league football group stage.

The Latvian national football team (Latvian: Latvijas futbola izlase) represents Latvia in international football and is under the control of the Latvian Football Association, the governing body for football in Latvia. They have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, but in 2004 they qualified for the European Championship under head coach Aleksandrs Starkovs.

Latvia has participated alongside its Baltic rivals Lithuania and Estonia in the local subregional Baltic Cup tournament, which is held every two years. Latvia is the current champion after winning the tournament in 2018. Latvia has won the Baltic Cup championship thirteen times, more than any other country in the history of the tournament.

Latvia's current home is the Daugava Stadium in Riga.
