In the territories that are now Honduras, the Mayans in Copán played the Pok-ta-pok game on fields in their cities. The game used a rubber ball. This sport was practiced in the 1000s and was a predecessor of basketball and football.

There are many reports about how football began in Honduras. A newspaper of the family Ustariz (French offspring) was delivered by a French ship, which was almost exclusively occupied by an English crew. It arrived on the shores of Port Cortés in 1896 and brought with it many footballs that they used for fun every time they came to Honduras. The exercise of this new sport aroused the curiosity of the harbor dwellers, who saw how the English sailors enjoyed football. These sailors encouraged the Hondurans to learn and play with the game.

Luis Fernando, a son of French immigrants, reported that some traders in Puerto Cortes had given him football in 1896 and that he had since played in Honduras. In 1906, the Government of the Republic hired a Guatemalan professor named Miguel Arcangel to teach football at the Escuela Normal de Varones in Tegucigalpa. Three years later, the Spanish monk Niglia presented the game at the Instituto Salesiano San Miguel in Comayagua.

By the time Honduran football took its first steps, several countries in Europe and South America had already formed their respective football associations, and others were under construction. This growth of associations on a global scale and the strong interest of the "Catrachos" in the practice of football have interested the government in Honduras under the control of President Manuel Bonilla for the sport.

For this reason, in 1906, the government hired the Guatemalan citizen Miguel Saravia to give football lessons to the students of the School of Men of Tegucigalpa. Three years later, Saravia should join his Spanish father Niglia to teach football, but this time at the Salesian Institute San Miguel in Comayagüela. Football became popular, especially in higher classes, although he could not compete against baseball, which remained the most popular sport until 1917.

The first professional clubs were founded at the beginning of the 20th century. The oldest team in Honduran football is Club Deportivo Olimpia. It was founded on June 12, 1912 by the known as Juventud Olimpica team as a baseball club and later converted into a football club. In Tegucigalpa other clubs were founded, including Lituania, Signos, Trebol, Honduras, Atletico Deportes, La Nueva Era, Colon and Spring. None of them exists now.

After the founding of Club Olimpia, football in Honduras reached a higher level of growth in the 1920s. It quickly spread to all corners of the country. In the capital of the country was founded in 1928 the Sportive Club Motagua. In San Pedro Sula, the clubs Marathón and Spain were founded in 1925 and 1929, respectively.

Further north, in the town of Puerto Cortés, Club Excelsior was founded in 1925. In La Ceiba occurred in 1929 a team called Naco. Elsewhere in the country, community leaders and football fans followed the example of these clubs and formed local teams.

The Honduran national football team played in 1921 their first international match.

In the second most important city, San Pedro Sula, football only gained in strength with the founding of the Club Deportivo Marathón. Some historians say that before Marathón there was an association called Club Patria, but only for a very short time. The President of the Republic, dr. Miguel Paz Barahona, called the sports fields Patria Marathón.

In 1928, the Club Deportivo Motagua was founded and named after the then controversial Guatemala and Honduras River Motagua. A year later, San Pedro Sula Real España (known since 1977 as Real Club Deportivo España) was founded.

The national association, the National Autonomous Football Federation of Honduras (FENAFUTH), was founded in 1935 and joined FIFA in 1946. In 1964 he joined the League Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras. Together, these two organizations oversee football in Honduras.

There are now about 60 professional and amateur football teams, which are divided into three national divisions: the Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Honduras, the Liga Nacional de Ascenso de Honduras.
