The home of the United Arab Emirates is different. Most of the home games were played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi with the Al Jazira Stadium in Abu Dhabi and the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain as other venues.
In 1990, the team played in Italy a World Cup appearance, but lost all three games against Colombia, West Germany and Yugoslavia. Two years later, the United Arab Emirates took fourth place in the 1992 Asian Cup and in 1996 became runners-up in the tournament. In both tournaments, the final was lost by penalty. They also won the Arabian Gulf Cup twice; 2007, when they won the title for the first time in their history, and 2013, when they won the title for the second time. In the AFC Asian Cup 2015, they took the third place and retired in the semifinals.
The first match of the national football team of the United Arab Emirates was held on 17 March 1972, four months after the unification of the United Arab Emirates. They played against Qatar at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh and the UAE won 1-0 with the only goal scored by Ahmed Chowbi. After that, the team met three other Arab countries, losing 4-0 and 7-0 to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, beating Bahrain 3-0.
After having participated in four Golf Cup tournaments since 1972, the United Arab Emirates hosted the 1982 edition and again took third place, as in the previous two tournaments.
In 1980, the United Arab Emirates qualified for the first time in Kuwait for the AFC Asian Cup. They were drawn with the eventual winners Kuwait, second place in South Korea, Malaysia and Qatar in Group B. They parted with Kuwait 1-1, but lost the other three games and finished their first appearance at the tournament in fifth place in their group and ninth (out of ten teams) in total.
They also qualified for the next two tournaments, Singapore in 1984 and Qatar in 1988, and retired in both group stages. Her first tournament win against India took place on December 7, 1984 under coach Heshmat Mohajerani.
In 1984 Mohajerani resigned as head coach of the UAE and was replaced by former Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira. Parreira led the country in 1988 at the AFC Asian Cup and left his post-tournament stance. Successor was the Brazilian World Cup winner Mário Zagallo. Zagallo led the country to qualify for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. However, Zagallo resigned before the tournament and Parreira returned as head coach to lead the United Arab Emirates at the tournament.
