The governing body of football in Ecuador is the Ecuadorian Football Federation, also known as FEF or Ecuafútbol. It carries out all national football tournaments and manages the national football teams. His seat is in Guayaquil. In addition, there are 18 provincial associations nationwide.
Club football is the country's most popular spectator sport. The country's top league is Serie A, followed by Serie B. Both contain only a small number of clubs (12 each) compared to other leagues across the continent. Both tournaments are organized by FEF. But for a considerable part of its history, club football was regionalized.
The first amateur tournaments in Ecuador were organized by two regional leagues: one in Guayas for clubs in Guayaquil and one in Pichincha for clubs in Quito and Ambato. Both held their first tournaments in 1922. Both leagues remained amateur until 1952, when the Guayas League held their first professional tournament. The Pichincha League, called Interandino, followed in 1954. Both leagues remained the country's top leagues until 1967, the status of the major league was ceded to the national tournament.

Until 1957 there was no national tournament in which the winners of both regional championships played against each other for the title. The first national title was won by Emelec. After a two-year break, the national tournament returned in 1960 and has continued to this day. The Costa and Interandino championships were from 1967 no longer considered top tournament.

While Ecuador is usually a competitive country, Ecuadorian clubs have had little international success. The first club to reach the final of an international tournament was Barcelona when he reached the 1990 and 1998 Copa Libertadores final. They both lost. In 2001 Emelec reached the second club the final of an international tournament at the Copa Merconorte 2001, which she also lost. In 2008, LDU Quito became the first club to win an international title, and in 2008 became the Copa Libertadores champion. LDU Quito also won Recopa Sudamericana and Copa Sudamericana in 2009. To date, these are the only international club titles won by an Ecuadorian team.
The Ecuadorian national football team (Selección de fútbol de Ecuador) represents Ecuador in international football competitions and is controlled by the Ecuadorian Football Federation (Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol). They play official home games at the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa in Quito.
Ecuador qualified for three FIFA World Cups in 2002, 2006 and 2014. The best performance was achieved in 2006, when it advanced to the knockout round, which was eventually eliminated by England. They are one of two countries in South America that did not win the Copa America, the other is Venezuela. Her best performance at the continental tournament was in 1959 and 1993 the fourth, both times on home soil.
