Jupiler Pro League-Belgian Pro League

The first Belgian Division A is the best league association football association in Belgium. After the 2015-16 season, it was renamed the Belgium football Pro League (officially known as the Jupiler Pro League.). The 16 club competition runs a promotion and descent system with the Belgian First Division B. The seasons run from late July to early May, when teams play 30 regular season games and then enter play-off 1 or play-off 2 according to their position in the base season. Playoffs 1 (also known as playoffs titles) are challenged by the 6 best clubs in the regular season, with each club playing together twice. Playoffs 2 (also known as the Europa League playoffs) are attacked by teams ranging from 7 to 15 players in the regular season, divided into two groups of 6 teams twice each other (three teams from Belgian First Division B also participate in playoffs 2 ). The team that finished 16th is ranked. Since 2014 the league has sponsored AB InBev, Jupiler brewers, and officially known as the Jupiler Pro League.

The competition was created in 1895 by the Royal Belgian Football Association and was first won by FC Liégeois. Of the 74 clubs competing in the first division since their inception, 15 were crowned the winners of Belgium. RSC Anderlecht is the most successful league club with 34 titles, followed by Club Brugge KV (15), Union Saint-Gilloise (11) and Standard Liège (10). It is currently ranked 10th in the UEFA league ranking based on its European competitions over the past five years. The competition ranked 3rd when UEFA first published its ranking in 1979 and next year in 1980, the best ranking achieved by the Belgian First Division.

In the 1980s, the European successes for Belgian clubs continued: Standard reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup 1981/82, Anderlecht won the Uefa league football in 1982/83 and lost the next UEFA Cup final and KV Mechelen won the European Cup 1987/88 winner trophy. In the domestic league Anderlecht 1986/87 won the twentieth title and thus the fourth of the decade. Club Brugge and Standard each won two titles in the 1980s, KSK Beveren and KV Mechelen one each.

In the nineties, the performances of the Belgian teams in European competitions declined, and only the RSC Anderlecht and Royal Antwerp FC reached in the years 1989 to 1990 and 1992 to 1993, the cup final of the European Cup winners. In the domestic league, the RSC Anderlecht won four titles over the decade, while the Bruges strengthened its status as the main competitor with four titles. The remaining two titles went to Lierse SK and Newcomer Racing Genk. The 2000s brought a brilliant European start: Anderlecht reached the second group stage of the Uefa Champions league 2000-01, but the rest of the decade Belgian clubs were again not very successful in European competitions. In the league, the RSC Anderlecht have won five titles in the last ten years, with Bruges won two titles and Racing Genk took the second title. At the end of the decade, Standard Liège returned as a title contender with two consecutive titles, 25 years after her title from 1982 to 1983. In the late 2000s, the highest level of Belgian football was remodeled with a play-off round after regular time. RSC Anderlecht won the first championship in this new format, the 30th title. After two more titles for Anderlecht KAA Gent was the surprise winner of the championship in 2015.

From the 2009/10 season, the format of the Pro League was drastically changed. Playoffs were introduced after regular time, the number of teams was reduced from 18 to 16 and the calendar was also changed, with games played during the Christmas holidays. Many have already criticized the format and pointed to the Dutch Eredivisie, in which the playoffs are no longer played. The RSC Anderlecht won the first championship in this new format, the Belgian Pro League 2009/10, which was their 30th Belgian Championship.

Games are usually played on Saturdays at 20.00. However, some matchdays take place on Wednesdays. In addition, in recent years, some games are played either on Fridays or on weekends at different times (eg, on Saturdays at 6 pm or Sundays at 1 pm or 8 pm), as determined by the owner of the television rights. Any team that plays in the Pro League must have received the Belgian professional football license, which guarantees that the club has no excessive debt, has a safe stadium, etc. This was introduced in the 2001-02 season to the number of teams to reduce in the league and achieve a secure result Higher professionalism in the clubs that play in the highest Belgian league. Originally, clubs that could not get the license should not be replaced (and sent to the third league). However, it is still not effective as, for example, KSK Beveren finished 18th (last) place between 2001 and 2002, but was rescued because KSC Eendracht Aalst (17th) and RWD Molenbeek (10th) were denied the license.

After the 2015/16 season, the number of professional teams in Belgium fell to 24, which mainly concerned the teams playing on the second level of the Belgian football pyramid, as the Belgian Second Division by the Belgian First League B and the Belgian First Division B was replaced Number of teams dropped to 8.

Regular season

Each of the 16 competitors in the Pro League receives once every other team in the regular season, a total of 30 games between July and March. A win brings three points and a draw one point. Teams are ranked by total score, then by overall victory, and finally by goal difference, number of goals scored, number of away goals and number of away wins. If the teams are still in the level, a test match is played in two legs to determine the final order in the ranking. A playoff phase will then be played from March to May.

Championship Playoffs

The points system in the championship playoffs is the same as in the regular season, except that each team begins with half of the points won in the regular season, rounded up to the nearest whole number. The points obtained by the rounding are deducted in the event of a tie.

The six best teams of the regular season enter the playoff championship, with the first-placed team wins the Belgian championship. Each team plays against its opponent twice, and the teams are ranked by points, rounds, wins, etc. as in the regular season.
